Whether you’re trying to banish dangerous varieties like brown recluses and black widows, or just don’t want tiny house spiders to startle you around the home, it’s okay to want spiders to stay far, far away.

And if you’re a gardener, you may already have a helpful product for banishing them in your garage or shed

The secret weapon? Diatomaceous earth.

Gardeners use it for pests in the garden, but the powder can be just as effective on spiders in your home.

“If a spider comes into contact with Diatomaceous earth, it will break down its exoskeleton, leading to death by dehydration,” the experts wrote.

The trick is to look for “food grade” diatomaceous earth.

The powder is safe to use around pets and humans – including small, curious children.

Another benefit? It’s inexpensive, with four-pound bags of the stuff available for as little as $8 online.

To use it, open up your bag and grab a small scoop, piling it with the powder. Even though it’s safe, try not to get the powder on your hands.

“Simply sprinkle the powder in small, low-traffic spaces around your home, such as under furniture,” the experts wrote.

Conveniently, those dark corners are also where spiders love to congregate.

You can also sprinkle diatomaceous earth along baseboards, windowsills, and any other area where spiders may enter your home.

“Follow the instructions for best use and avoid using it on countertops or anywhere you prepare food,” the experts advised.

When you sweep or vacuum, you can replace the diatomaceous earth after, and keep an eye peeled for any arachnid corpses sprinkled throughout.

You might even find that ants, roaches, and other bugs in your home have died from the powder, too.

Once you’re done, close your bag of the powder uptight, or decant it into a large plastic container and pop it back in the sked.
